Week 17

December 27 - 28

The last week of our contest proved to hold little hope for anyone trying to challenge Tony for first place. Very few of the match-ups lent themselves to split decisions, and hardly anyone foresaw the upsets caused by so many teams with nothing to play for. With all that being said, Tony, Jason, Phil, and Jay each earns a week-17-best 12-4 record, and the top 3 does not change from the previous week. That means that for the second year in a row, TONY is our contest champion! He is followed fairly closely by second place JASON and third place PHIL. Some brief comments about this final week... Everyone did very well, with no one earning less than 10 wins. Oops, there's an asterisk here though. Cody forgot to send in his picks for the second time this season, and that keeps him solidly locked in to the absolute bottom of the rankings at 134-122. That makes Ray's record - a mere 27 games out of first place - not look so bad. Everyone picked Indy, NE, Philly, KC, Carolina, and Miami correctly, while conversely, no one picked St Louis or Cincinnati correctly. Only Shannon picked Arizona to beat Minn. But Joe was the only one to wrongly pick TB over Tenn. Alan and Kerry both goofed by picking Denver over GB, while Kerry joined with Tanya and Satish in erroneously choosing Oakland over SD. Satish also fumbled by going solo with a pick of Pitt over Baltimore. 2003 was another great year... Sad to see it end so soon! Thanks to everyone for making this a fun contest. Stay tuned for the playoffs!

Replay Challenge # 10:
OK, I have to admit. This challenge really was not thought out very well. The "double-down" idea on the confidence points didn't work the way I thought it would, as the doubling could really only go one way. So there was almost no point in doing it. And taking away the worst two weeks from everyone did virtually nothing to level the playing field. So, I guess everything needs a trial period, and this year was just that for the Replay Challenge. If it's back next year, you can bet that I'll keep only those contests that actually worked. But thanks to everyone for playing along anyway!! The final tally in the Challenge looks rather similar to the regular picks contest, with TONY winning it outright with 141.6 points, PHIL in second with 135.7, and JOE in third with 134.6.
