Week 5

October 10 - 11

It seems like I knew what was coming by putting the contest banner in blazing letters. This contest is absolutely on fire. Some-how, Shannon was able to scrape together a 9-5 record this week, leap-frogging over Joe, Brad, and Phil (all going 500 or worse) to sneak into a first-place tie with Jason. You can see by the top two tiers of players that there are ELEVEN other people within 4 or less games of the lead. So much for wheat and chaff separa-tion! It seemed like Cody pulled off the impossible with a season-saving record last week, but that feat was matched here as Shane smacks everyone down with an amazing 11-3 mark. He quickly goes from pretender to contender.

With these headline-making swings in back-to-back weeks, it should probably be noted that Tony, the two-time defending cham-pion, is still lurking only 2 games out of the lead. Talk about flying under the radar. However, perennial challenger Tanya has been digging herself into a hole. She's down by 5 games, but probably not out. Jay is in the same bad spot, but with no history of chal-lenging anyone, he should be making himself comfort-able on the bottom row. Also resting unceremo-niously near the bottom is Kerry. While most people get burned on one or two of the major upsets each week, he seems to get torched by all of them, every week.

Poor Tracy and Mike have unfortunately been routinely picking most of the wrong teams. So it goes this week too. Mike wears this week's dunce cap after being the only player to take Cleveland, and he joined only with Tracy in going with Buffalo. Jay also had a loner bad pick, wishfully thinking Houston would beat Minnesota. It was close - but an L is still an L.

Here are some player quotes from Week 5...
Shannon: We're getting to that point in the season where the wheat starts separating from the chaff, both in the NFL and in our contest...
Shane: ...and I know what that chaff smells like..
Phil: (on picking NO over TB) If Chris Simms couldn't win big games in college, do you think I will expect him to win his first NFL start?
Tanya: My team sucks so bad that even when they're favorites I can't bring myself to pick them!!!
Tracy: (Responding to the weekly wrap-up email) I see you didn't even mention the biggest loser of them all. I was so pissed this weekend!!! Before halftime - I was GOLDEN!!! I was a contender!!!! Then it all went to hell...
